It is a hotly debated question among many today, “Can over masturbation be harmful to me in any way, and at what level does masturbation become over masturbation?” This question has been asked by many thousands of people before now and the results seem to be fairly widely held as being true for the majority of people.

Even though we are taught various different aspects of masturbating throughout our lives, whether it be from our parents, our schoolyard friends or even our teachers and other adults in authority, generally the information that is received is misinformation, or in a lot of the cases, is incomplete information. It is now a scientifically proven point that masturbation in general, meaning, not excessive or deviated from basic masturbation practice, that there are no harmful physical effects to the body.

This of course, will depend upon the particular case of masturbation. Although masturbation performed in moderation will have no harmful physical effects on our bodies, over masturbation or prolonged masturbation using bad technique, can have effects upon us. For this reason it is perhaps important here to loosely define masturbation and over masturbation. The difference between the two levels of masturbation can vary greatly from person to person, and maybe the most prominent sign of over masturbation is, pain or other ill effects in the genital or even muscular regions of the body. Friction sores are a dead giveaway that over masturbation is occurring.

In loose terms, over masturbation occurs when, there is not enough time between masturbation periods for your genital area to repair any wear and tear that might be taking place. As masturbation involves friction and pressure, there is always a period of rest and recuperation required after any masturbatory or sexual action. Over masturbation occurs, simply when this period of rejuvenation is cut short and not being able to take its course properly.

There are many common myths about what physical effects can occur after masturbation, a lot of which are commonly passed around at school amongst students who really don’t know any better. Some of these include the statements that “Masturbation causes blindness, hair to grow on one’s palms, impotence to occur in later life, leads to mental illness, can reduce your sexual appetite in later life, and even, that masturbation can have negative effects on semen production and quality”.

All of these common myths are just that, myths, and have been proven by science to be untrue, unless specific rare circumstances occur, but which are not directly connected to masturbating, but are the effects of some other disease or illness. In fact, such famous research scientists as those who work for Masters and Johnson, have been hard at work trying to answer this very question about the effects of masturbation. So far their findings indicate as stated above, that masturbation in moderation has no immediate medical effects on the body and can in fact in some cases have beneficial effects on the body.

Despite the evidence found by Masters and Johnson, however, there is one area that is not touched upon and that should be seriously considered when learning about masturbation, and especially when teaching or giving advice on the issue. This effect is more of a long term effect, brought about by the learning of bad or incorrect techniques, that then develop into real problems in later life. Lets take a look at an example of this effect as it would play out in the case of masturbation, and how it can harm us in later life.

It is common for most people to start exploring masturbation during the teen years of our development, meaning that in most cases we are at school when we start to masturbate. Being at such a young age, it is very rare for people to feel comfortable talking about their experiences and discussing techniques and problems as such. This often means that the technique that we develop when we are teenagers is the technique we use for many years.

Now, being a teenager, and performing masturbation, is usually an act that is done for one simple purpose, being the pursuit of pleasure, the desire to feel climax from ejaculation. For this reason, it is very common for teenagers to masturbate as fast as they can to get to that climax feeling as fast as possible, both for the feeling of pleasure, and often, also to get the act performed without being caught by anyone.

So over the years we go on masturbating as fast as possible and as such, do not realise that we are teaching our bodies to climax as quickly as possible. This is one of the major factors towards male sexual problems in recent times, and more specifically, Premature Ejaculation.

So in conclusion, No, there are no immediate harmful effects of masturbation, as long as it is performed in moderation with enough healing time between acts, and that we are using healthy techniques that will help us to maintain a strong healthy libido and endurance level in later years of our life.

A personal search through the Bible for a single reading on my topic-masturbation; I must say was a bit disappointing since I found none to my surprise. To me, I think the Bible’s silence on the topic is a bit odd since it goes a long way to speak plainly on other sexual matters such as fornication, adultery and even sex with animals. Christ, in one of His teachings went beyond ‘fleshly adultery’ and pointed out adultery of the heart. (Matt. 5:28). Many Christians of today in an attempt to justify masturbation as a sin go as far as comparing it to ‘Onanism’; as seen in Gen. 38:9. In actual fact, most people prefer to call masturbation ‘onanism’. But then, Onan’s behavior was a clear act of malice and cheating on Tamar; moreover, his actions cannot be said as masturbating.

Masturbation refers to the sexual stimulation of one’s own genitals with the intent of achieving orgasm. This stimulation is mainly performed manually, or by the use of bodily contact short of intercourse, through the use of objects or a combination of these. Main types include self masturbation, mutual masturbation and animal masturbation. It is closely related to sexual fantasies and they move hand in hand. Ethically, some people see it as a sin which far out weighs fornication, adultery or even rape.

This is a universal issue which occurs in all circles of life. Nearly all adolescents masturbate and even married men and women practice it. James McCary, author of Human Sexuality has found that about 95% of men and between 50 and 90% of women masturbate. I must however; point out that it is very acute for Christian singles, who out of their Christian values and convictions have said NO TO SEX outside of marriage.

The question now remains- ‘Is masturbation a morally accepted activity for a disciple of Christ or is it a gift from God to help avoid sexual promiscuity?’ Most medical experts are of the view that the practice is safe and not harmful when done with restriction. It is viewed in many mental health circles as a means of relieving depression, stress and subsequently leads to a higher self-worth. It is also helpful in relationships where one partner wants more sex than the other; providing an alternative to sex and eventually leading to more stabilized relationships. In reproductive health, it may be viewed as a means of increasing fertility during intercourse. Female masturbation alters conditions in the vagina, uterus and cervix, in ways that can alter or increase chances of conception but this however, depends on the timing of the masturbation. In males, masturbation brings out old sperms with low motility from the genital tract making way for fresh sperms with higher chances of conception in the next ejaculate. Lastly, some couples find it as means to developing their full sexual potentials; identification of more sensitive parts of their bodies.

Some main concerns about masturbation is its close connection with sexual fantasies which in most instances lead to most sexual perversions; pornography, rape and the like. Also, is the issue of the ‘singularity’ of masturbation. It is true that it can bring some sort of satisfaction though; orgasm, but it should however be mentioned that this forms only a small part of the larger whole of sexual intercourse therefore making it a selfish act. This could lead to very serious consequences of obsession, guilt, self-hatred and idolatry in the long run.

The silence of the church on this issue is not helping Christians at all neither is its counsel of repression. Desperate as most Christians are, they try to suppress their sexual feelings and be free from all the guilt and disappointment that comes with it. The onus therefore lies on the church to explicitly discuss this topic and help its congregation to make the right choices. Masturbation is a real part of the human sexual life pattern and cannot be completely swept under the carpet or eliminated, but disciplined; with emphasis on the discipline. This is a very difficult problem for most people and I must emphasize that divine help from the Holy Spirit will do us a great deal of good in helping to control it entirely.
